- Dumptruck Terminal: If this record only had "Still Been Had", "Terminal", and "Long Ride" on it, it would still kick everything else's ass. Luck has it that it was a full-length release - and every single moment of sound is stunning.
- Paul K. and the Prayers Saratoga: On which Mr. Kopasz makes his most accessible music carry some of his most harrowing lyrics.
- Rodriguez Swing Like A Metronome: it was an accident, but isn't falling in love always?
- Moby Play: Appalachian dance music. Techno at Robert Johnsons' Crossroads. Just forget it and dance.
- Wayne Hancock Wild, Free, and Reckless: Big Train keeps a rollin'
- Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band The Mountain: I'd always figured on Earle being a punk at heart. His glorious treatment of bluegrass seals the deal.
- The Jellybricks Soapopera: Pure and pop. Teeth-rotting stuff.
- Steadman Loser Friendly: a bunch of blokes making dynamic power-pop-ish music for - well, well, well, it's about time - people who still like songs.
- L7 Slap-Happy: solely because it knocked me on my ass.still does
- Lone Justice This World is Not My Home I hate to do it; put a "greatest hits" (although there were no hits involved) type package on this list, but, the band - at its best - was as good as anybody at what it did. The songs, at their best (and they are at their best here), were better than what anybody else did. They could never put it all together for one "proper" LP, but this baby does it now. Believe.

- Matthew Shipp with William Parker dna New York has been then center of gravity of a wave of musicians which include William Parker, Dave Ware, Matthew Shipp, Susie Ibarra, Whit Dickey and other too numerous to name. These musicians have all been putting out consistently engaging music on a variety of labels.
- Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre Dream of ---- Mcintyre in the 1980's and early 1990's drifted off the radar. This recent release demonstrates what we have been missing.
- Vandermark 5 Simpatico "Kicking-ass" seems to be the motto for Mr. Vandermark. He is able to play well in a wide range of styles which include delicate ballads but his forte is in well written, highly energetic pieces with angular melodies accopmanied by his telepathic rhythm section.
- Gino Robair Buddy Systems A series of duets with Robair who is a Bay Area percussionist with members of the Bay Are improv scene.
Joe McPhee As Serious as Your Life This disc of solo trumpet and reed improvisations contains some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.- Wadada Leo Smith light upon light Smith is able to present a wide range of his music including a solo viola piece and a largeensemble.
- Any recording of the Die Like a Dog Quartet including Little Birds have Fast Hearts (FMP) or From Valley to Valley (Eremite) issued in 1999. One of the outstanding ensembles of the 1990's.
